More
than half of New Zealand is used in farming (mostly sheep
farming) or forestry.
New Zealand's climate is also well suited to growing a wide range of
horticultural crops
Other leading farming products are beef and fisheries.
New Zealand's wine industry is expanding and gaining
prominence in the world market.
New Zealand's economy is heavily dependent on overseas
trade.
Research also continues into a range of alternative crops in New Zealand.
New Zealand boasts 49.5 million sheep which is about 14 sheep per person! More than half of the country is used in farming (mostly sheep farming) or forestry.
The average farm size is about 536 acres (215ha). The most popular sheep breed is Romney, and beef breed is Angus or Angus/Hereford cross. New Zealand's major markets for meat are the the USA, United Kingdom, Canada, Germany, France, Japan and the Middle East.
Almost all of New Zealand's dairy products are exported - mostly in
the Asia/Pacific region.
New Zealand produces 60% of the world trade in strong wool, and 13%
of the total world wool production.
New Zealand's climate is also well suited to growing a wide range of horticultural crops - the major export varieties being kiwifruit, pip fruit (apples, pears, nashi), and stone fruit (apricots, peaches, nectarines, cherries).
New
Zealand's wine industry is also expanding and gaining prominence in the
world market. New Zealand's oldest winery is Napier's Mission Vineyard,
which was established in 1851. New Zealand is renowned internationally
for its sauvignon blanc, chardonnay, pinot-noir and cabernet-based reds.
Central Otago is New Zealand's fastest growing wine region.
FORESTRY
Radiata pine grows quickly in a range of conditions in New Zealand
and New Zealand is one of the world's largest producers - producing 34
percent of the world market. Japan is our largest export customer taking
almost one-third of New Zealand's forestry products.
FISHERIES
New Zealand's fishing waters comprise a 1.9 million km exclusive economic
zone, which is about 15 times the country's land area. Japan is New Zealand's
largest market taking almost 1/3 of all exported seafood, especially rock
lobster and snapper. Pacific oysters, greenshell mussells and salmon are
produced by marine farming.
IMPORTS
& EXPORTS
New
Zealand's economy is heavily dependent on overseas trade. Our main exports
have traditionally included meat, wool and dairy products, but now include
forestry products, machinery, aluminium, chemicals, fruit and nuts, raw
hides and skins.
We import machinery, vehicles and other manufactured goods.
Australia is our biggest export and import market, although over recent
years the Asian region has grown in prominence for both exports and imports.
