Picnic Places Around Alexandra
1. Shaky Bridge
Turn off Tarbert Street into Fox Street, following into Kerry Street,
at the end of this is the Shaky Bridge. There are many pleasant shady picnic
spots to be found beneath this historic bridge.
2. First Galloway
A good river spot for small children. It is easy to locate. Follow
the Manuherikia road, leave PSH85 at intersection, turn left after crossing
the Galloway Bridge and enjoy a picnic beside the river.
3. Second Galloway
Suitable for swimming with a nice picnic spot under the trees. Directions
out of Alexandra as above except once over the bridge continue on to Fisher
Lane, turn left and follow this road to end.
4. Butchers Dam
Situated approximately 10 minutes from Alexandra via the Clutha bridge,
the dam is well signposted from the main road to the far side of the lake.
5. Conroys Dam
Has fishing, swimming or walking opportunities. Conroys Dam is well
signposted and is approximately 20 minutes from Alexandra. To travel to
Conroys Dam, turn off Earnscleugh Road on to Conroys road (gravel). Care
is needed when driving along this road to the dam. When leaving the dam
to return to Alexandra, drive along Conroys road to Chapman Road which
leads on to Earnscleugh Road and back to Alexandra.
6. Manorburn
Dam
Fishing, canoeing, swimming or walking. Well signposted, the dam will
be reached by travelling along Manuherikia Road past several orchards and
fruitstalls, until "Give Way" sign, turn right off PSH85 and
drive over the bridge. Follow the tarseal and turn right on to a gravel
road just before the railway crossing. At the end of this road turn left
(over a railway crossing). Manorburn dam is at the end of this road.
7. Fraser Dam
A good fishing and picnic spot. Turning off Earnscleugh Road into Blackman
Road, continue for 2.5km, after a sharp right curve, then left on to an
unmetalled road. Follow this for nine kilometres to the dam.
7A. Fraser Domain
A popular picnic spot which has toilet facilities and a barbecue area.
Activities can include swimming, fishing and walking. Situated off the
Earnscleugh Road near Clyde. The way to the domain is well signposted.
8. Clutha River. Alexandra Boat Harbour
Amenities include toilets, picnic table, jetty and launching ramp.
Situated at the end of Dunorling Street, the area is developed in grass,
attractively surrounded by trees and overlooks the Clutha River.
9. Alexandra Centennial Swimming Pool
Outdoor heated pool, all ages and swimming levels catered for, lovely
garden setting for a relaxing day with the family.
10. Clyde Swimming Pool
Outdoor swimming pool. Great place to cool off on those long summer
days.
11. Muttontown Gully
Area has a small creek, picnic tables and a barbecue area. It is situated
between Alexandra and Clyde on the main highway, on the right travelling
towards Clyde.
12. Lanes Dam
Scenic reserve is situated on Aronui Road off Earnscleugh Road. A peaceful,
picturesque area where people can feed tame ducks, sit in the shade of
a tree, rest, or walk around the gardens. A children's playground is close
by.
13. Tucker Hill
Turn left over road/rail bridge.
14. Omeo Gully
Situated beside the Fraser river. Just after Earnscleugh corner, take
Blackman Road which leads to a gravel road that is signposted.
15. Pioneer Park
Situated in town centre of Alexandra. Picnic tables, children's play
area, toilets, large playing field, tennis courts.
16. Molyneux Park
Situated north end of Centennial Avenue, Alexandra. Children's play
area, taps, tables, toilets.
