Briar Dell’s lavender farm has been established 8 years ago.
Hardy English lavenders grow well in the Central Otago climate. Hot dry summers bring out the full vibrant
colours and strong sweet fragrance of lavender.
The main cultivators grown are
Lavandula x intermedia ‘Grosso’ & L. xi ‘Impress Purple’, for oil & drying.
Lavandula angustifolia ‘Pacific Blue’ for oil & drying,
Lavandula angustifolia ‘Hidcote’, for drying.
Early angustifolia lavenders start flowering early to mid December, Intermedia lavenders follow on from late December through January. The flowers are
harvested around the beginning of February
for oil distillation. The lavender is in full flower in mid January and is at its peek for viewing.
Briar Dell produces high quality lavender oil which is sold onsite in an old historic stone building, originally the first hospital morgue, now renamed ‘The Still Room’
