Garden of National Significance

CROMWELL CENTRAL OTAGO NEW ZEALAND

garden

Briar Dell is a one acre garden which was once part of the old maternity annex of the Old Cromwell Hospital built around 1913.

Garden areas have been redesigned and developed over the past 13 years, divided by existing trees and shrubs, newer stone walls and hedges of yew, beech, viburnum, buxus and lavender to provide structure and shelter. The house, with its wide verandahs framed with wisteria and ornamental grapes, has courtyard ‘rooms’ at each end using different plant colour and forms.

A formal herb garden features culinary and decorative herbs. This was once an old tennis court which existing concrete was uplifted and relayed as paving.

Briar Dell is planted for interest throughout the seasons with flowering Prunus and Malus trees in spring, old roses and perennials in summer and brilliantly coloured trees, shrubs and climbers during autumn. It is an established but evolving garden which truly complements the schist buildings, its dramatic Central Otago setting and climate of hot, dry summers and severe winters.

Briar Dell is registered with the New Zealand Gardens Trust and is endorsed as a garden of National Significance. Visit their website www.gardens.org.nz

The garden is open from the beginning of October until March, at other times by appointment only.
